The strategy of the European Union
The main goal of the EU’s proposed strategy “An Energy Policy for Europe”, launched in January 2007, is to transform the EU into an economy that is highly efficient in energy terms and with low carbon dioxide emissions. It established demanding targets for 2020:
- 20 % reduction of greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990.
- 20% share of renewable energies in overall electricity consumption.
- Minimum 10% share of biofuels in transport.
- Achieve a 20% saving in energy consumption in 2020 compared to a business-as-usual scenario.
Two of the main goals of the National energy strategy in Portugal are the increased use of renewable energy and fostering energy efficiency. Accordingly, ambitious targets for electricity generation from renewable sources were established: 45% share of overall electricity consumption by 2010 and a 10% increase in the use of biofuels in transport in the same period.
